Canadian Judicial Council to convene an inquiry into the conduct of Justice Michel Girouard at the request of the Attorneys General of Canada and Quebec

Ottawa, 22 June 2016 – The Canadian Judicial Council has received a joint request by Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and Minister Stéphanie Vallée to conduct an inquiry into the conduct of Justice Michel Girouard. A copy of the letter from the Ministers, as well as other related correspondence, is available on Council’s website.

The Judges Act requires that Council proceed with an inquiry when requested by the Minister of Justice of Canada or by the Attorney General of a province. 

In accordance with Council’s Inquiries and Investigations By-Laws, 2015, the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice, has been invited to designate one or more members of the bar of a province. Other members of the inquiry will be chosen amongst Council members.

Other than exceptional circumstances, inquiries are held in public. Further details about the inquiry, its composition and its schedule will be made available in the coming weeks.
